Omdia and IDC report Q3 2026 global PC shipments fell about 20% year over year as memory price hikes driven by AI demand suppress sales

Analyst firms published Q3 2026 PC shipment data. Omdia: shipments fell 21.2% YoY to 58.1M units (desktops -23.5% to 11.7M, laptops -20.6% to 46.4M). IDC: shipments fell 20.1% YoY to 62.7M, from 78.5M in Q3 2025, and fell 9.1% from Q2 2026 (68.2M). Omdia forecasts a 24% YoY decline next quarter and a 7% decline in 2027. Both attribute the drop to memory and storage cost increases, pre-stocking earlier in the year, and high channel inventory.

What happened

Two analyst firms published Q3 2026 PC shipment estimates that agree on direction and roughly on size. Omdia says shipments fell 21.2% year over year to 58.1M units (desktops down 23.5% to 11.7M, laptops down 20.6% to 46.4M). IDC says they fell 20.1% to 62.7M, from 78.5M in Q3 2025, and 9.1% from Q2 2026 (68.2M). Both blame higher memory and storage costs, pre-stocking earlier in the year, and high channel inventory. The roughly 4.6M unit gap between the two totals reflects different methodologies, not a disagreement about the trend.

02

Why it matters

Buyers of PCs, from consumers to corporate IT teams, should expect higher prices and tighter supply, and may want to bring forward refresh purchases or stretch existing fleets. PC makers face weaker volumes and squeezed margins, while memory suppliers such as Micron and Samsung gain from the shift of capacity towards AI server demand. Memory and storage are reportedly close to 40% of a PC's bill of materials, against a typical 15%, which would be a real structural cost shift if it holds. The main uncertainty is how much of the drop is price-driven demand loss and how much is an inventory correction after pre-stocking.

03

What is noise

"Sharpest decline since Q1 2023" is a framing of a quarterly figure, not proof of a lasting collapse, and part of the fall reflects pre-stocking pulling demand forward. Omdia's forecast of a 24% drop next quarter, a 7% fall in 2027 and shortages lasting to 2028 are projections, not data, and analyst forecasts of this kind often miss. The figures are also estimates from firms that do not publish full methodology, and the coverage does not link the primary reports.
