Google DeepMind releases WeatherNext 3, a higher-resolution AI weather forecasting model, and begins integrating it into Search, Maps and Gemini

Google DeepMind and Google Research released WeatherNext 3, a new AI weather forecasting model with 2.4x more parameters than its predecessor, WeatherNext 2. It offers hourly forecasts (up from six-hourly), 5 km resolution on key variables, a claimed 60% improvement in rain evaluations, and can ingest raw real-time satellite data directly. Google says it topped Brightband's Operational WeatherBench benchmark against rivals including Microsoft, Nvidia and ECMWF, and plans to roll the model into Search, Maps, Gemini and its cloud platforms for researchers.

This is a genuine product upgrade with specific, checkable technical claims and an independent-ish benchmark reference, not just a vendor press release. If it ships as described, hundreds of millions of Search, Maps and Gemini users get materially better short-term forecasts, and researchers get cloud access to a state-of-the-art model. The bigger strategic point is competitive: Google is trying to out-benchmark Microsoft, Nvidia and the traditional forecasting establishment (ECMWF, US National Weather Service) in a domain that used to be the exclusive territory of national meteorological agencies.

The claims about improved crop yields, more dependable renewable energy planning and better forecasts for developing regions are entirely speculative, no evidence is offered that any of this has happened or will happen soon. This is also an incremental successor to WeatherNext 2, not a fundamentally new category of capability, and the "first time weather variables power major Google products" framing overstates novelty since weather data already informs these products in some form. The headline framing ("no excuse to forget your umbrella") is standard tech-press packaging, not analysis.
